The course of the efforts for peace and a political solution in Libya was discussed late Wednesday at the UN Security Council meeting organised by the Council's German presidency.
Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said in a written statement that he pointed out the need for the immediate termination of all foreign intervention in Libya and for the strict observation of the arms embargo, which are two parameters that fuel the conflict and lead to further instability in the country and the surrounding region.
In this context, Dendias said that Greece actively supports the UN's efforts for immediate ceasefire and the return of the adversaries to the table of negotiations in an effort to reach a political solution. Greece's steadfast aim is peace in Libya and the establishment of security and stability in the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean. Included in this framework, Dendias said, are contacts such as his meeting with the president of the Libyan parliament, Aguila Saleh Issa, last week in Libya.
He repeated Greece's position on the need for Libyan ownership of the solution, in order for this to be viable and sustainable, as well as being based on international law, respect of human rights and in accord with the relevant UN decisions and the conclusions of the Berlin Process, which are reinforced by the recent Cairo Initiative.
Additionally, he underlined the importance of the EU Operation "IRINI" to enforce the arms embargo, in which Greece is actively participating.
Finally, he said that any discussion on Libya will not yield results if the fact that international law in Libya is being flagrantly violated is completely overlooked.
"I stated clearly that Greece will do everything possible to uphold international legality, achieve peace in Libya and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean," concluded Dendias in his statement.
