LNG facilities at Patras get ministry approval

The Environment & Energy Ministry gave the go-ahead to the construction of liquid natural gas (LNG) facilities at the south port of Patras, the central Greek city, on Monday.

The supply and storage facilities project comes under the Poseidon Med II program and will cover a total of 25,000 square meters near the Glafkos River estuary, within the territory of the port. It will have a storage capacity of 3,000 cubic meters.

Poseidon Med II is cofunded by the EU and involves Greece, Italy and Cyprus. It includes six European ports - Piraeus, Patas, Iraklio, Igoumenitsa, Limassol and Venice - and the terminal LNG station at Revythoussa, in the Saronic Gulf.

LNG will provide alternative fuel for shipping, and before approving the project the Ministry considered environmental repercussions, and benefits to the economy, security and public health of Greece.
