The condition prevailing on the islands of the northeastern Aegean in relation with the migration-refugees issue and its consequences of the specific matter on the residents everyday lives were the issues discussed at a meeting on Tuesday held by Alternate Citizen Protection Minister responsible for migration policy Giorgos Koumoutsakos with party deputies elected on the specific islands.
According to a ministry's announcement, the suffocating condition prevailing on the islands due to the high number of migrants and refugees that hosted in the hotspots and the need for a more effective protection of the borders dominated the meeting while concern was expressed over a possible increase in refugee flows in the next period. The issue of acceleration in the asylum procedures, the strengthening of the responsible services in infrastructures and staffing and the repercussions on tourism were also discussed at the meeting.
Ministry sources said to Athens-Macedonian News Agency that this meeting on Tuesday was a first meeting aiming to record the problems and the proposals adding that a new meeting with the participation of all MPs elected on the specific islands will be held in the next period.
